Possum Jaw, Shadow, and a Lemon For Contrast

Here are some newer things. First is the possum's jaw which I found while visiting Mepkin Abbey. The others are a random flower, my son's shadow, and a well placed glass on a pieced together table. Click for a larger view.

Dead Bird Round 2

Now we revisit the dead bird. Several days after taking the photograph below I went back to check on the bird's progress. I found only a pile of feathers. I had to poke around in it, however, and was pleased to find it's skull and spine still laying there. So I took them. I couldn't resist using them for something, and I think these three have very different feelings to them. Click to enlarge.

Sometimes You Get Lucky

On the way to work the other day I was walking as I often do, looking down completely engrossed in my own head, when I suddenly, almost as if someone was trying to show me, noticed a dead bird on the edge of the sidewalk. The thing that really caught me was how its head and neck had been completely turned into a skeleton, yet the rest of it's body looked as though it was a perfectly healthy bird about to jump up from its slumber and fly away. I couldn't help but photograph it. I simply got lucky with the fly.

Fireworks = Happiness

On Friday nights Charleston Riverdogs baseball game attendees are granted a special treat. On these nights we get fireworks. It's a rather great experience actually. $5 gets you in where you get to watch an entire game, experience the gamut of characters vending everything from peanuts to beer to flashing swords that will tempt any of us with a child hiding within our being, dive into a wide selection of food from the greasy fried chicken to gourmet pizza to the mysterious dippin' dots, drink very large beers for very few dollars, and wrap it all up with a fireworks show. This is cheap entertainment at its best.

However, this is about that last little facet; the fireworks. Let's face it, fireworks are beautiful and they make us happy. So, have a taste:

"The best camera is the one that's with you"

I couldn't agree more. When it comes down to it, the best camera is the one that you are going to use. Yes, that is obviously the intention of the camera, but what I mean is that having a multi-thousand dollar camera that you rarely carry around because it is cumbersome is not of much value, despite its "potential" resolution. If you carry a pocket camera around with you, and you use it frequently, then that is the best camera to have. Even the iPhone, as demonstrated here, is capable of producing beautiful images with feeling in them; you just have to have the thing with you and use it. Sure, not every camera can make a 40"x60" print, but then again how many of your images do you ever enlarge that much? Most of us stay relatively small, and all the modern digital cameras will do perfectly fine for what you will do with it. You'll never find the techie sites including this in their in their reviews, and you could spend your time analyzing features and specs until an entire new generation of digital cameras has been released. But, then again, you wouldn't be taking any photographs, would you? No. So, stop obsessing over resolution. Stop worrying that you have to get a camera that looks impressive. Just get something, carry it around with you, and use it.
